Dallin asked Sadie to go to prom with him this year. They actually went to prom together as sophomores. (Cute, huh?) :) They have been really good friends through the years, and I'm glad they have such a great friendship. Dallin wanted to do something really hard to ask Sadie to the dance. He decided to get a box and a bunch of locks that Sadie would have to figure out the combinations to to get to the message inside the box.
So I went in search of the perfect box. I looked on Amazon, Michael's, Joann's, and a couple of DI's. It needed to be tall enough to put the latches and the locks on, and it also needed a hinged lid. I found a few that I thought could work, but they just didn't seem right. Finally, I found this box at one of the DI's, and it was perfect for what Dallin wanted.
Here are a few pics of the box and some of the latches...3 in the front, and 1 on each side.
Because the box was thin, the screws that we used to put the hinges on went through to the other side and stuck out on the inside of the box. So we took some floral foam and stuck them on each of the screws, so that Sadie wouldn't scratch herself when she opened the box and reached inside. (You can kind-of see those on the top of the lid.)
Then Dallin stuffed the inside with little pieces of shredded colored paper, glitter, and confetti. It's hard to tell from this picture, but it was quite the mess inside the box!
There were 5 locks altogether, but Dallin decided to "give" the key to the keyed lock in the beginning, so Sadie only had to figure out 4 other clues. She also had to figure out which clue went with each lock. It was pretty hard...and that's exactly what Dallin wanted!
The clues...
The locks...
(Notice the middle lock needs a key. The rest of them were different combination locks (numbers, letters, directions, etc.)
Pretty cool, eh?
Dallin froze the real key inside one of these snow balls, but he also hid fake keys in several of the others. She had to search for the real key. (Poor Sadie!) :)
Inside the box were tiny hearts with letters on them. Each word was a different color. Sadie had to find all the little hearts, put the colors together, and then figure out the message.
You have the key to my heart
Prom?
Dallin Jones
So cute, huh? And pretty mean, right? I think it took Sadie about an hour and a half to figure out all the clues to the locks and decode the message inside. (But I think it took us longer to make!) HA! :)
Dallin loves the movie, National Treasure, so she answered him using that theme. She made a copy of the Declaration of Independence, and put an "invisible" message on the back of it. It was really cute, and it took us a little while to decode it. The whole thing was really fun and so clever!
Prom isn't for a couple more weeks, but hopefully I'll get some pictures of the event! Stay tuned! :)
